Why we made this
We designed this alpine hardshell to be waterproof, durable and breathable — made for climbers, the Lightweight Prophet performs consistently across all four seasons.
  • Product Description
Designed for mountaineers, the Lightweight Prophet is an alpine hardshell providing advanced weather protection and technical performance. Engineered to be waterproof and windproof, this jacket is fully seam sealed and features Pertex® Shield Pro fabric for a waterproof and durable 3-layer construction that provides highly breathable protection for extended use in extreme conditions. Pertex® Shield Pro uses a microporous membrane to allow moisture vapour to pass through the fabric, effectively minimising sweat build up and keeping you comfortable for longer. Complete with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) fabric treatment, the Lightweight Prophet is engineered to help keep you dry in the mountains. Designed with the climber in mind, this jacket has increased lift patterning in the underarms for freedom of movement and is both helmet and harness compatible, with raised hand pockets (and an external chest pocket) for easy access while on route. With a clean silhouette, high collar and YKK® AquaGuard® water-resistant pocket zips (please note: they are not waterproof), the Lightweight Prophet is fully featured for all-weather mountain missions.

Disappointing, not built to last
I've owned this jacket for a couple of years, I was led to believe it had a lifetime warranty. When the lining started to fall apart around the shoulders and it stopped being waterproof, I took it into Macpac for repair or replacement. I was told that I'd "worn it too much" and it wasn't covered under warranty despite me caring for it as per the instructions. I hoped that a jacket this expensive would last me a long time, apparently not. I won't be shopping at Macpac anymore.

A good all-rounder
This is the second Macpac rain jacket I have owned.
I live on the West Coast and have had plenty of time to rest this coat. It stands up really well in the rain and the rain rain beads nicely off the jacket.
I read the previous review about the pockets, but, have not had a problem.
I would have liked to have had some ‘after care’ hints or tips or guidance as I am not that experienced at keeping my jacket in the best waterproof condition.
The jacket also has a 'modern' cut to it, making it a good looker on the streets.
All round, I am pleased with my purchase.

Unfortunately I am disappointed with my Prophet raincoat. I don’t know if mine is from a bad production run. The first time I used it, water seeped in through the shoulders. A couple of years later and the membrane around the shoulders has disintegrated. I have not used it enough for such deterioration to be explainable. I just don’t trust Pertex and now find myself looking for a new raincoat.

Excellent but let down by non-waterproof zips
This is in most respects an excellent jacket. It allows excellent freedom of movement, the sleeves are long enough but (unlike the previous version of the same jacket) not too long, and the Pertex fabric seems highly waterproof and breathable. The hood is roomy enough for a climbing helmet and has good swivel and adjustability so that it can be made reasonably snug without a helmet. It has a good rigid wired peak which is great in high winds, and the hood gives good facial protection by coming quite far forward while not unduly restricting field of view. The pockets are sensibly positioned so that they won't conflict with a climbing harness, and the jacket is admirably light overall for a high-spec jacket. But - and from my perspective it is a fairly big but - I discovered on a recent outing that the zips are not waterproof. Macpac's website describes the pocket zips (only) as YKK Aquaguard zips, which Macpac says are 'highly water resistant' but 'not waterproof'. This is an important distinction, but Macpac's current description is in my view not an adequate warning. As far as I can tell from looking and from my recent experience, the main zip is the same type as the pocket zips. I recently used the jacket skiing on Ruapehu. It was a fairly unpleasant day, even by Ruapehu standards, as it was around zero and raining. It was somewhat windy but not a howling gale. After a few hours' skiing in intermittent rain, I found that items in the (zipped up) pockets were soaking wet. More concerningly, pretty much the whole of my front, inside the jacket, was wet. My arms, shoulders and back were dry, so the fabric seems to have worked well. But the front zip allowed water to seep in. I should perhaps mention the front zip has an internal storm-flap but not an external one. On a multi-day trip, water seeping through the front zip would be at best a nuisance. By comparison, I have not had this problem on previous waterproof jackets over the past 15 years or more. I have always considered a top-notch waterproof jacket to be one of my most essential items in the outdoors - hence buying this one. But in light of my recent experience, I don't feel I can recommend this jacket in its current form. I do see, however, on a bit of googling, that YKK produce 'Aquaseal' zips as well as 'Aquaguard' zips. YKK describe 'Aquaseal' as waterproof, and Aquaguard, by contrast, as 'water repellent'. My recent experience leads me to the view that Aquaguard zips are not 'highly water resistant' as Macpac says, and are not suitable for a top-of the-range all-weather mountain jacket. I hope in its next incarnation Macpac includes fully waterproof zips in this otherwise excellent jacket - including for the pockets.

Very impressed, good job Macpac designers!
Overall an excellent jacket. Upgraded from a decent 2.5 layer and the difference in waterproofing is significant, while the slight increase in packed size and weight is barely noticeable. I can't compare with other high end 3 layer jackets but was impressed that after a full day in pouring rain I was bone dry under this (even on the shoulders under pack straps). I also appreciate that unlike a lot of jackets it's available in a nice bright colour which is good for safety (especially if you love traipsing around the tops solo in poor weather like me!)

So glad we brought this for our trip
We brought 2 of these jackets, mens and womens for our backpacking trip for 6 months. We hiked the Manaslu circuit in Nepal and it kept us so dry amongst the rain. Just as important it stopped the ice cold winds coming through over the mountains. It also done well to keep us dry whilst riding round Vietnam on motorbike in torrential rain. Very breathable and comfortable. So glad we spent the extra !

extra good
Over a wet month fishing the west coast last spring this jacket out performed any jacket i've ever owned ( approx 6 from UK, Australia& US ). miles of walking and wading and two complete dunkings and I still got out nearly completely dry from the waist up. Comfortable to wear all day and easy no catch movements with rod and binoculars . My only minor gripe can't you make one in a a good olive colour for fishers and wildlife work?

Best rain jacket I've ever owned
I've had 3 Goretex jackets in the past, all different army issue jackets. In terms of breathability and waterproof rating I have found this jacket to be superior. I recently took this jacket to EBC during October and found that I was a small handful of 15 people who stayed dry during 10 hour day treks through the Himalaya's. This jacket made me proud to be a kiwi representing NZ designed gear.

My favourite jacket
I bought this to replace an old 2.5 layer Gore-Tex jacket, and i started out a little unsure about the "extra' weight of going to a 3 layer, but the team at Albany were super helpful in finding the specs and putting my mind at ease about the weight as it was lighter than the jacket it replaced. This is super waterproof, durable and breathable. I cant rate this jacket better for NZ conditions!

is the hood detachable?
David M on Oct 14, 2020
BEST ANSWER: No, and it is big to account for a helmet. Running atound without that can mean its a little annoying to get it fitting right. But I'd definitely take that given it gives amazing protection in really poor weather. That is, you can just narrow it to eye slits.
Does it have a snow skirt?
AJ0hnston on Jan 22, 2020
BEST ANSWER: This is a great jacket, which I've just used in the Himalaya. My son has one too. There is no snow skirt though.
