Why we made this
A versatile mid layer for days in the mountains — whether it be climbing or other activities, this super light active insulation will keep you warm no matter what.
  • Product Description
A versatile mid layer for days in the mountains, whether it be climbing or other activities, this light active insulation will help to keep you warm. Made from Polartec® Alpha® Direct — the same insulation that was originally made for the U.S. Special Forces when they needed an advanced insulating fabric in their combat uniforms — the Nitro offers pared back performance. An evolution of fibre, Alpha® Direct eliminates the needs for a backing fabric and can be in direct contact with skin or other fabric layers, increasing breathability and reducing garment weight. Designed with alpinists and multi-sport athletes in mind, this minimalistic mid layer is warm and incredibly breathable.
  • Design features

    Highly breathable and fast-drying pullover
    Regulates core body temperature

Great warm and conformtable
Great warm feeling instantly, not for cold winter days as not very thick but good for layering up

In contrast to Zac
In contrast to Zac, I love that the Alpha doesn't have an outer shell! On a cold morning I wear a wind jacket (Macpac doesn't make one?) over my Nitro fleece. As it warms up I either remove both or just keep the wind jacket on. The Nitro plus wind jacket weighs less then a 100 weight fleece. Yep it's not the most durable material, but that is the trade off for weight!

Needs a windshell fabric outer
Most things about this piece are great, but unfortunately the alpha direct on its own is just not durable. And I don't mean not durable for bushwacking, but simply not durable enough for outdoor use. First hike with it I wore a small hole in the right shoulder just from the normal action of taking on and off my pack a few times. On the other hand, this Alpha Direct stuff is as awesome in all other ways as people make it out to be. So here's what we need: Alpha Direct with a really light windshell fabric outer, with a short zip neck and maybe a small cinch on the waist hem. That's it. This could potentially give you the perfect midlayer in about 200 grams. The Adidas Terrex Agravic comes closest to this, but this only has Alpha on the chest (and too many pockets), rather than full coverage. Why not use Alpha to create a real midlayer? You can of course throw a windshell over the Nitro every time you use it with a pack, but it seriously does have to be *every* time, so its a clumsy set up. I would love to see Macpac make this jacket next iteration.

Great Alternative to Merino Wool
I wanted a long sleeve Merino shirt as a base later and discovered this fabric online and was intrigued! So I purchased one. Did not regret the purchase as the Polartec fabric is fantastic as against the skin - soft, light, and fluffy. I immediately felt the warmth when I tried it on.

I really like the slim fit as well. I'm 1.67m and 80kg and chose the Medium - asphalt/tendershoots colour (lighter grey in colour than whats shown online. It was a little long on the arms, but thats ok.

I haven't had the opporunity to wear it out yet but if its any different to what I've already mentioned then I'll be sure to come back and update my review. I have noted from other reviewers that you will feel the wind, so i'll be sure to take note.

Lightweight Warmth
I found this garment through a Utube blogger living in Australia.
The garment is lightweight and fits very well.
As I have not had an opportunity to wear it for it's intended purpose owing to the lockdown here in the UK.
Customer Service was good as I had to use my step sons Australian address to purchase it and he posted it to me.
I think the manufacturer could go into larger sizes and international shipping as the global market is the way forward.
I like the garment and commend it to the reader of this review.

First impressions
Slim fit (as described). I normally wear a size large and this size in the hoodie fits fine.

Hood adds warmth.

So lightweight. I've worn it trail-running in the evening (temps 12C). It keeps me warm, but still breathes to wick moisture.

Very warm, very light but odd sizing.
Really light and really warm but if its a little windy, you'll know about it. You need another layer underneath or a windbreaker over the top. Im normally a small but it's too tight under the arms, had to get a medium.

Superb "active" ultralight midlayer
Very warm (for its weight), very light, nice on the skin, versatile and quick drying. As part of the learning curve, it took me some time to realize it's completely air-permeable - i.e., even in slightly-windy conditions, if it's cold enough, a windproof layer should be added. Its weight is one of its fortes - it weighs half of what my go-to power-dry fleece hoody weighs. The only downside for me is the lack of zipper - even a 1/4 or 1/2 length zipper to help with excessive heat buildup.

Got this for husband. He wore it non stop for weeks, no joke
I’m a fairly new ambassador. I got medium for my husband (174cm/72kg). He’s worn them on two expeditions (he’s a film guy) to Cholatse & Kilimanjaro. He wore them every day for 10-15 days on both trips and claims he didn’t stink! Lightweight, warm, pack able. As with the women’s - an essential piece! Good close to skin or as a mid layer

Is there a shipping option to the US?
Caboose on Dec 20, 2019
Thank you for getting in touch with us.
Unfortunately Macpac isn’t currently shipping to USA. We hope to get this rectified in the near future.
In the meantime, the only way would be to get it shipped to a friend or family member that lives outside of the USA, and they could then re-send onto you.
Kind regards, The Macpac Team
