Why we made this
The ultimate softshell pants for technical mountaineering and alpine hiking, the Alpine Series Fitzroy Pants are designed and tested in partnership with the New Zealand Alpine Team.
  • Product Description
Designed and tested in partnership with the New Zealand Alpine Team (NZAT), the Fitzroy's are the ultimate softshell pants for technical mountaineering and alpine hiking. A pillar of our Alpine Series, the Fitzroy outerwear range offers flexible protection in harsh environments. Wind and water resistant, these softshell pants have a durable and stretchy polyester/elastane construction with a warm fleece backing and a short-chain DWR C6 fabric finish to help repel moisture. Combining comfort with protection, the fabric is breathable with a 5,000 g/m²/24hr breathability rating and water resistant with a 10,000 mm hydrostatic heading rating — please note, that despite the HH rating, these pants are not seam sealed so we class them as water resistant, not waterproof. They have a soft, lined waistband, slim fit with a tapered leg and boot-compatible cuff with an internal grip band, boot hook and tie down loops — ideal for snowy conditions.

Very Impressed
The are the best winter pant I have owned! Fleece lined for extra warmth and comfort. I love the tapered leg as most other water proof pants are too baggy. These pants feel very well made and so far have done a great job of repelling any rain. I can’t comment on their suitability for climbing as I only wear them for walking, camping and watching outdoor sport in the winter.

Very happy
Very happy with these. The cut is good and combined with the stretch material makes the pants very comfy. Spent 6 days in them in the NZ Southern Alps in December. They kept out lots of wind and wet snow and the warmth was just right, never too hot or cold. Fit snugly over a pair of la sportivas Nepal boots

Poor fit, very loose around thighs, below knee was fine. Shame as material and finish appeared good.

Top notch adventure gear!
Excellent quality, comfort and functionality. I used these pants to go skiing and considering all the bails throughout the day they kept me warm and relatively dry.. the only thing - they're not designed to fit over snowboarding boots but the comfort and warmth made up for it.

Very Warm and Comfortable
I used these pants for the coldest days in Harbin, China in January 2019 and they were so warm. I used a light 150gsm merino base-layer with these and the cold didn't touch me, despite getting down to about -25 degrees Celsius. They were actually too warm with the base-layer on a number of occasions including walking the Great Wall and snow skiing. They worked great with my ski boots, with the zipper at the bottom easily accommodating the boots. I stayed warm and dry in these pants.

not very durable for climbing
just got back from a trip up the remarkables mixed alpine climbing, I wore these pants for 2 days in pretty ugly weather, when I got back down I found multiple rips+tears in these pants. I am guessing this is from strong wind, snow, and rock. I wouldn't climb in them again. saying that they are super warm and really comfortable, great hiking in a mountain environment over the colder months. I would recommend these for winter hiking, but not technical mountaineering

Is the softshell fabric a membrane textile or woven? I am after something breathable, not a clammy membrane.
Sean P on Jul 9, 2020
It’s a membrane textile but fleece on the inner that certainly keeps you warm in freezing conditions. Not a pant to be worn in the warmish months as you will certainly overheat. If you’re planning to hike into alpine in winter they are the perfect. They’re a great pant and you won’t be disappointed if you decide to go ahead with purchasing a pair.
