Why we made this
A Macpac classic, the Vamoose child carrier has been taking small children along for the journey for years.
  • Product Description
Take your little explorer along for the ride with the Vamoose Child Carrier — designed to be safe and stable, this child carrier is all about comfort for both parent and child. With a colourful 'kiwi' print, the Vamoose has a breathable Explorer harness with a wide, padded hip belt for effective weight distribution and overall pack stability. The adjustable child seat, with a three stage hook-n-clip harness system, ‘grows' with your child and helps to keep them secure on the go. Made from durable fabrics with plenty of pockets for extra gear — it has a 19 litre storage capacity and a detachable day pack — the Vamoose Child Carrier is perfect for adventurous families. Easy to remove, the day pack unzips off the carrier for everyday convenience or when you need to share the load. The Vamoose Child Carrier includes our Sombrero sunshade and Rainbow rain cover for unpredictable weather days. It's also compatible with our child neck pillow but this is sold separately.
Please read the warning and instruction labels on your child carrier carefully prior to use.

Rinse the pack well and dry it in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight
Do not put your pack in the washing machine as this will void your warranty

Solid performer, v/good harness
Typical MacPac fare; solid, utilitarian, more interested in performing well than looking fancy.

Harness is very comfortable, very solid, pretty good airflow. Massive sweat patches between shoulder blades and at lower back as you'd expect, but they were very localized and everything else was cool and dry.

A couple of bells and whistles which would make this an even better product;

1) Hydration bladder compatibility (I know, how to avoid heat transfer chilling the child, while maintaining height for a gravity syphon, tough one) or at least D-rings on the shoulder straps to attach drink bottles via carabiner.
Not just your own drink bottle, because you're constantly passing a sippy cup up to your passenger.

2) Grab handles on the sides; if you're taller than the person helping lift the pack-with-child on and off your back, the top grab handle is awkward.

3) Zipped pockets on both hip straps. One is good, two would be better.

Sizing is critical, I have this adjusted an inch past the maximum marking and the hip straps ride above my hips, although I was at the very limit of the S2 and got it because the S3 would be way too big for the wife and teenage daughter to use.

Suitable footwear is also critical.
I'm wearing four seasons Lowa alpine boots like bricks on my feet, and they weren't overkill on a flat easy trail.
The child's weight is very top heavy, while nappies and such in the lower compartment weigh almost nothing.
Wearing this thing is basically an exercise in how to correctly pack a multi-day rucksack, but backwards.
Except the load in a multi-day rucksack doesn't lean to one side for a better view, or suddenly twist around to watch a bird fly off.
Choose boots and socks designed for carrying heavy loads in rough terrain, with maximum ankle support.
The weight of such boots is fatiguing, but your child weighs more than you think they do, descents are treacherous, and the extra ankle support is essential.
Have never used trekking poles before, but definitely getting some good ones for the next outing.

Overall, a really good product well worth the money, being able to take our wee daughter (13 months) into the bush to experience podocarp and towering totara was priceless.

The rubber bits on the ends of the sun-shade inserts got trashed the first time we used them, but this was a result of the insert sleeves being tight as hell and having no give to them.

I would rather have the little rubber protectors get trashed because the product fit is too tight and rigid, than receive a brand new pack with loose sloppy fit, so I can't hold that against MacPac at all.

Definitely recommend this product to anyone with wee kids, but highly recommend getting it measured for fit in bricks and mortar store if at all possible.

This is an amazing pack. We love the comfort, baby loves it, and it looks great. Delivery was prompt. The only thing that we do not appreciate is the lack of instructions for the shade cover. This was a key feature that we looked for in a pack and the instructions do not include how to install. We do not live near a store so heading in to ask for help is not an option, and besides, it really should be included at this price point.

Fantastic carrier for NZ tracks
This carrier is fantastic! Parents AND baby love it. It's very comfortable to wear, the straps and the belt are nicely padded and easy to adjust. We can easily swap carrier with my husband even if we don't have the same build.
There is plenty of room to store everything baby and parents need. We don't even use the second backpack that attaches to the top of the carrier. The sunshade works well and the mosquito net is a great feature.
The carrier also folds reasonably flat for storage and it's not too big so I'm pretty sure it would fit in the plane for the holidays overseas.

If I had one thing to complain about it would be the lack of pocket for a camelbag. That would make the carrier's life much easier!
Alright I have a second thing to complain about: the colour. It's a child carrier but its colour is a dull mud green so sad it's depressing to look at. The Possum model is a nice blue colour, why go for grey-green on the Vamoose?

Great for men, not the right shape and size for smaller women
The carrier is really great quality and works really well for my husband to carry our daughter on walks. Unfortunately it doesn't work well for me to carry her as the design doesn't work well for smaller women with curves. The straps on the shoulders and waist don't go small enough to carry her weight at the right height (they need to pull in about another 3 inches or more). The chest strap is also in the wrong place as it won't sit either above or below breasts but cuts across them. This strap is really important for holding the childs weight forward against your back. I would really recommend the product for men, but would love a carrier that is designed specifically for women.

If you can, test before you buy
I got one last year in prep for a travel with 2 little ones, thinking i can put my 1yo into the carrier and use a stroller for my 4yo.

I'm 1.8m tall, 100KG dude and well, the carrier does start to feel heavy after a short while.

My little boy was first amused by the experience but quickly rejected the carrier after 10 mins being in it.. He does not like being "contained" in the carrier.

If you are serious about this carrier, it's best if you can find one to test the kid's reaction to it.

Quality Product
Really impressed. Very comfortable. Very versatile and functional. I'd use this pack three days a week lugging my 6 to now 9 month old lad around the farm and can't recommend it highly enough!

Thanks Macpac for providing such unbelievably good value!

Hydraytion system/ bladder contained in the carrier?
Taz2019 on Jun 28, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hello Elle, a hydration bladder, while not designed specifically to have one, will fit and you could make this work. Thanks.
Is there an uncovered metal bar that runs up the centre of the pack? It's hard to tell from photos. Just wondering how that will feel on your spine..
