Why we made this
Designed for committed alpinists, the NZAT Down Quilt 350 is ultralight, water-resistant and can sleep up to three individuals.
  • Product Description
Climbing light without compromising your safety is a constant battle in the mountains. Our NZAT Down Quilt 350 achieves the perfect balance, featuring premium HyperDRY™ 850 loft Responsible Down Standard (RDS) goose down within an ultralight Pertex® Quantum outer shell. Designed for alpine climbing — as well as adventure racing, cycle touring and lightweight camping — this rectangular quilt can sleep up to three individuals at any one time. Simply fasten the four side straps and bottom bungee cord around the sleepers to keep the quilt secure. The HyperDRY™ goose down is water resistant, while the tightly woven Pertex® Quantum shell not only allows insulation to fully loft, but it’s breathable and weather resistant with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) fabric coating. Engineered in collaboration with the New Zealand Alpine Team, this sleeping bag alternative is ideal for cold mountain adventures, whether it be for the climbers or keeping the support crew warm and comfortable back in base camp. Please note: we haven't attached fixed temperature ratings to this down quilt because it does not meet the traditional sleeping bag testing requirements. Testing requirements specifically consider the warmth of one individual inside an insulated bag, whereas this is a 'quilt' style insulation piece and is intended for multiple people to use at the same time, so as to save on weight. That being said, this quilt features 350 g of 850 loft HyperDRY™ RDS goose down and the New Zealand Alpine Team climbers have used it while climbing in Patagonia during the summer and climbing in the New Zealand alpine region during the spring, summer and autumn.

Not suitable for single person use
I've spent thousands of dollars on Macpac equipment in the last few years and generally am very happy with my purchases. I got this a while ago and hadn't had a chance to use it but the kids wanted to camp out on the back lawn while we are in lockdown so I thought perfect I'll try it out. Temperature overnight was going to be 12 degrees so I thought that's great I won't be too hot. I had a very uncomfortable night and woke up from being cold frequently. I tried it again the following night and also used my silk sleeping bag liner and wore my Marino undies and lightweight Marino t-shirt on a slightly warmer 15 degree night and still woke several times from being cold.
It seems like a great idea. Being tall and generally not fitting in regular sleeping bags and always feeling too constricted and ending up with the attached hoods always askew I thought I'd found the solution but this isn't it. I'd say it's only suitable for summer as a single person solution and even then I wouldn't risk taking it bush. Disappointed in Macpac's description. I would not want to use this in Alpine regions in any season. Really misleading I feel.

Love it!
Fantastic for two people, the weight saved is awesome. Obviously the more insulated your matt the better, and looking forward to the winter version, but my poor sleeping bag will be lonely for the foreseeable future.

Awesome product
I've just bought this quilt to replace my very old, very heavy sleeping bag. This is such a cool product! It's super light and packs down small - my pack now feels almost empty! I used it on a fairly chilly night in a hut and coupled with my silk liner, I was warm enough to warrant opening the window! My only comment would be that it needs 2 extra toggles along the side for use with one person (which is how I'm planning to use it primarily), so I'll look to add these on myself.

Be prepared to sleep in your clothes. And carry a sleeping bag.
This equipment is designed for a particular purpose and particular people: fit, warm blooded, alpinists, who value light weight over warmth. I made the mistake of thinking because it was rated for mountain work that it would be warm. It’s not. It’s barely summer weight and is literally a quilt, ie, sewn thru. Used with a silk liner it would be okay for two people on maybe a 15 deg C. night. Bundled around one person in say a hammock it might better. Three people top to tail, sleeping in their clothes, and not minding how little sleep they got before continuing on a climb, yeah, it’s probably perfect. It’s well made. That’s about the best I can say. Macpac should try harder to give this a temp. rating, and be explicit about what it’s NOT for, eg., normal people trying to be warm. I should have done more research.

Hello M M, thank you for your review. It is worth comparing to a fully zipped 350 loft sleeping bag, which is rated to keep you warm down to 5 degrees, so comparing the quilt (depending on how you use it) should be good for 7-10 degrees. The NZ Alpine Team have made a fantastic video worth checking out on the different ways to use this:

Awesome bit of kit !
Loving the new quilt, great for the lightweight hunter\hiker. Very impressed with how warm it was on a recent Lewis Pass tops hunting trip. I have paired it with a Sea to Summit compression bag to get it even smaller in my pack. Highly recommend if you are in the market for a quilt.
